It's faster and less painful," she said, doing her best to avoid the crowds and passing buses.     Scheduled to open in June, Line 10 will provide a high-speed link for commuters - and their elderly relatives - between Bagou in the west and Jinsong in the south.     On Friday afternoon, Zhou Zhengyu, deputy director of the Beijing municipal committee of communications, joined a group of journalists to try out the new route.     The 15.5-billion-yuan (2.18 billion U.S. dollars), 25-km line, along with two other routes linking the airport and the Olympic Green, will open in June, once testing has been completed - just in time for the millions of Olympic visitors, he said.     "But we won't slow down our construction plans once the Games have finished," Zhou told China Daily inside one of the line's new carriages.     "In fact, we will accelerate our development plans to provide an even better service for the people of Beijing."     Since the opening of Line 5 in October, the number of passengers using the subway has risen by more than a third, he said.     By 2015, Beijing's metro will stretch more than 561 km and feature 420 stations, Zhou said.     The existing network spans 155 km and has 93 stations, with the cost to develop each additional kilometer averaging out at about 500 million yuan, Liu Hongtao, a senior official with the Beijing railway transportation construction corporation, said.     He told China Daily the massive infrastructure project was already progressing well.     "Three lines are close to completion, one is under construction, and ground has been broken at six others," he said.     "The total cost of all the extra lines will be something like 200 billion yuan by 2015," he said.     "The government's usual annual budget for public transport is about 1 billion yuan," Zhou, who will be in charge of public transport in Beijing for the next five years, said.     Wang Hailong, who has worked as a taxi driver in the capital for the past five years is not worried about the metro taking away his business.     "The new subway does us little harm," he said. "And it will certainly ease the pain of millions of people who now travel by bus."

GENEVA -- China has reached understanding with the United States and Mexico on their alleged trade subsidy measures, sparing a WTO panel ruling on the case, the Chinese WTO mission said here on Thursday.Chinese Ambassador Sun Zhenyu signed respective memorandums of understanding with his US and Mexican counterparts "regarding certain measures granting refunds, reductions or exemptions from taxes or other payments" at the WTO headquarters on Thursday, the mission said in a statement.In the MOUs, China made it clear to the United States and Mexico that "the policy of exemption for certain foreign-invested enterprises from payments to the State for worker allowances is no longer operative."Besides, the policy of value-added tax (VAT) refund to enterprises for the purchase of domestically produced equipment does not constitute prohibited subsidies as provided by relevant provisions of WTO agreements."Other preferential policies on income tax pertinent to the disputes have been repealed or will be repealed along with the implementation of the new Enterprise Income Tax Law of China," the statement added.According to the Chinese mission, the MOUs will be notified to the WTO as mutually acceptable solutions to the above-mentioned dispute in accordance with the Dispute Settlement Understanding of the world trade body.The United States filed the case to the WTO in February and later was joined by Mexico. The two countries alleged that China was using tax breaks and other incentives to "subsidize" its exports, which might violate WTO regulations.A WTO panel was established in August to investigate the case, following failed consultations between the three sides.But the three sides finally reached understanding on the dispute through continued discussions.

HANGZHOU - Nineteen people are missing with only one rescued after a Liberian ship collided with a fishing boat in the East China Sea on Saturday night, said the Zhejiang Maritime Affairs Bureau on Sunday.A spokesman with the bureau said that the Liberian ship, "Formosa 10", collided with the fishing boat about 11:40 pm in the sea off the eastern Zhejiang Province, on its way from Taiwan to the Republic of Korea.The fishing boat, with 20 people on board, capsized."Most of the missing people are local fishermen and the others are from the neighboring provinces," said the spokesman.The provincial search and rescue center sent more than ten searching boats to the scene immediately and a helicopter arrived to assist in the operation around 6:45 am on Sunday.More than 20 fishing boats also participated in the rescue work."The visibility at the sea is favorable but the temperature of the sea water is very low. Usually, it's hard for people to survive more than 12 hours in such cold water," rescuers said.

SHENZHEN -- Construction began Saturday on an experimental facility which will offer a platform for Chinese and foreign scientists to work together for discovering a new kind of neutrino oscillation in Shenzhen, South China's Guangdong Province.It was the second biggest cooperation program Chinese high energy scientists ever conducted with other foreign counterparts since October 1988 when the positive-negative electron collider was built in Beijing.Through the collider, scientists from China and the United States have cooperated and carried out legions of scientific research.Saturday's construction commencement function was attended by more than 100 people, including government officials and foreign diplomats, such as Dr. Robin Staffin, Associate Director of Science in the US Department of Energy.Neutrino Oscillation is an intriguing behavior of a sub-atomic particle called neutrino.And the new facility is being built in the mountain near Daya Nuclear Power Plant, which has four reactors with a combined thermal output of 11.6 million kw in operation, and Ling'ao nuclear power plant is not far away. Both nuke power plants will serve as sources of anti-neutrinos for the experiments when the facility is finished.Workers will build three underground experimental halls which will be connected by long tunnels in the mountain that shields the experiment from unwanted cosmic radiation.Each hall will feature a 10-m deep water-pool within which eight anti-neutrino detectors will be deployed. The water protects the detectors from nearby radiation that interferes with the measurement, and helps identify surviving cosmic radiation.And the first experimental hall is expected to be ready by the end of 2008. Commissioning of the detectors in this hall will take place in 2009.Civil engineering construction is anticipated to last about two years, with installation of the last detector scheduled for 2010.Upon completion of the new facility, more than 190 scientists from six countries and regions including the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Taiwan Province, the United States and Russia will come over to do research work, according to Chen Hesheng, Chief of the Institute of High Energy Physics with the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).The facility will have a budget of 250 million yuan (US.25 million). And China will be responsible for infrastructure construction and making of four detectors. And the United States will be responsible for making of the rest of the detectors.Wang Yifang, chief scientist on the experiment, said he was confident that the program would make an important contribution to finding a new breakthrough in China's research efforts in particle physics, starting a new horizon in world's neutrino research, and to improving the overall strength of China in science and technology.

The first ever white paper on political parties pledges multi-party cooperation and political consultation under the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC). Released Thursday by the Information Office of the State Council, the white paper, entitled "China's Political Party System", explains in detail the formation, characteristics and development of the system and its role in economic and social development.Multi-party cooperation is a political system that suits China's conditions, the paper says."China will not mechanically copy other countries' political party systems," the document says, adding that the history of modern and contemporary China has proven that blind emulation of the political or party systems of other countries will not succeed.Zhuang Congsheng, director of the research office of the United Front Work Department of the Central Committee of the CPC, said multi-party cooperation is different from the two-party or multi-party systems in Western countries and the one-party system practised in some other countries. [Reuters]Stronger-than-expected economic figures have prompted a number of international economic research institutions to revise upwards their forecasts for China's gross domestic product (GDP) growth. Almost all the major economic indexes in the first two months of this year have exceeded those for the same period last year. "The country's GDP growth in the first quarter will be faster than in the equivalent period last year and also that of the previous quarter," Chen Dongqi, deputy director of the Institute of Economic Research of the National Development and Reform Commission, said. The State Information Center has adjusted its GDP growth forecast for the first quarter from 10.2 percent to about 11 percent. Despite the government last year adopting a number of tightening measures, economic growth has shown clear signs of rebounding in the past quarter. Statistics show that urban fixed-asset investment picked up moderately to 23.4 percent year-on-year in January-February, and from about 20 percent in the fourth quarter of last year, reversing the trend of a gradual slowdown since last July. Meanwhile, the trade surplus registered a massive leap of 230 percent, and retail sales were up 14.7 percent on the first two months of last year. "Industrial growth is a key driving force behind overall economic growth, and power generation is also a useful indicator," Chen said. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, China's industrial output rose 18.5 percent year-on-year while industrial profits soared 43.8 percent in the first two months. Growth in power generation also accelerated to 16.6 percent year-on-year from less than 14 percent in the same period last year. Despite expectations the government will introduce another round of tightening measures soon, global investment bank, Lehman Brothers, still revised up its forecast for the Chinese economy. According to a recent report by the firm, the first quarter growth forecast has been raised from 9.8 percent to 10.1 percent, and the annual growth rate from 9.6 percent to 9.8 percent. "In the light of the stronger-than-expected figures in the first two months of this year and the likely policy responses, we have lifted our full-year growth projections for this year to 10 percent from 9.1 percent, based mainly on stronger growth in credit, investment and exports," Qu Hongbin, the chief China economist with HSBC, said. Domestic banks extended new loans of 982 billion yuan (7 billion) in the first two months of this year compared with 716 billion yuan ( billion) in the same period of 2006. The government forecast early last month that the country's GDP is to grow by about 8 percent this year. The country has just witnessed four consecutive years of double-digit growth, including 10.7 percent GDP growth last year, the fastest in a decade. The latest official forecast reflects the authorities' determination to shift the focus of economic growth from quantity to quality.

KUNMING -- Fourteen people were killed and six others were injured after a bus veered off a road and plunged into a ravine in southwest China's Yunnan Province, a local government official confirmed on Thursday.The bus with 20 passengers on board veered off a highway in Maguan County of Wenshan Autonomous Prefecture of Zhuang and Miao Nationalities at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, said Liu Qingfu, deputy head of the publicity department of Wenshan prefecture.Fourteen people died at the scene. The injured have been rushed to a nearby hospital and are reportedly out of danger.The cause of the accident is still being investigated.
