BEIJING, May. 13 -- China's trade surplus decreased slightly last month from a year ago amid declines in international trade growth triggered by the global economic slowdown.     Monthly surplus reached 16.68 billion last month, down 1.14 percent year-on-year but up 24.5 percent from 13.4 billion U.S. dollars in March, the General Administration of Customs said yesterday.     Exports in April rose 21.8 percent year-on-year to 118.71 billion U.S. dollars, while imports rose 26.3 percent to 102.03 billion U.S. dollars. China's trade surplus decreased slightly last month from a year ago amid declines in international trade growth triggered by the global economic slowdown.(    The sharp decline in April's export growth after a 30.6 percent rise in March should be seen as a return to the medium-term trend rather than a sudden weakening in China's exports, said Sun Mingchun with Lehman Brothers.     He said year-on-year growth of exports in March 2008 was abnormally strong given exports in March 2007 were extremely weak because exporters had frontloaded their shipments last February.     China's trade surplus has been narrowing since the government took measures to curb exports of resource-intensive and heavily polluting products and started to encourage imports from last year.     The World Trade Organization has predicted global trade growth will decline to 4.5 percent, 1 percentage point lower than last year. It could be the slowest rise since 2002.     "The global economy is facing more uncertainties this year given the possible shrinkage in US demand and inflationary pressures. Both these factors are expected to aggravate the global economic slowdown, further affecting trade," said Liang Yanfen, a researcher with the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation.     "Slowing external demand may take more time to impact export growth, but the weakening trend is becoming more evident both in and outside the US. Higher commodity prices and currency appreciation would check the continued rise in trade surplus," said Ken Peng, a Citi analyst.     Export growth stayed robust at 21.8 percent but is under pressure as even Asian demand has started to slow, suggesting that a weakening in the final product markets is affecting upstream producers while imports continue to be supported by a stronger currency, high commodity prices and government controls over trade in food and resources out of inflation concerns, he said.     The country's trade surplus in the first four months narrowed to 57.99 billion U.S. dollars, 5.31 billion U.S. dollars lower than a year ago.     Exports in these four months amounted to 424.6 billion U.S. dollars, up 21.5 percent, or 6 percentage points less than a year earlier. Imports were 366.6 billion U.S. dollars, up 27.9 percent, or 8.8 percentage points more than a year earlier.     Realized foreign investment reached 35.02 billion U.S. dollars during the four months, up 59.32 percent year-on-year, the Ministry of Commerce said.

BEIJING, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- China will give more efforts to strengthen quality supervision of dairy products in rural areas, said Chen Deming, the minister of commerce, on Wednesday.     "The Ministry of Commerce (MOC) always gives food product supervision in vast rural areas a priority, although it is not an easy job to carry out as in urban areas," said Chen.     Chen said the MOC has urged local authorities to take tangible measures to regulate and stabilize the dairy markets in such areas.     The local governments were asked to launch strict supervision and inspection over dairy products in rural shops, enterprises and wholesale markets. Tainted milk products should be removed from shelves in time.     "The MOC will continue to work together with local governmental organs to ensure a sound market order, and help farmers get more knowledge about dairy products," said Chen.     Meanwhile, Chen noted the country should adopt concrete measures to lift consumer's confidence. "The government should enhance inspection over product quality, while enterprises should take on more social responsibility."     China's food quality has been criticized recently, as 13,000 infants nationwide were hospitalized with kidney problems and at least three were killed after drinking baby formula tainted with melamine. The chemical, which was added illegally, makes the protein content of milk appear higher than it actually is.     After the Sanlu formula's problem exposure, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine conducted a nationwide examination of baby milk powder to find 22 companies whose formulas were tainted.

BEIJING, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- Some 53.2 million people hit the roads in China on Wednesday, the third day of the "golden week", said a Ministry of Transport (MOT) spokesman.     Although that figure was an increase of 5.1 percent year-on-year, it was 4.2 percent lower than Tuesday's 55.5 million, because most travelers began their journey in the first two days of the holiday, he said.     The "golden week" National Day holiday this year runs from Sept. 29 to Oct. 5.     The spokesman said 740,000 medium-sized and large vehicles were used to move travelers around the country on Wednesday, compared with Tuesday's 760,000 vehicles. NEW YORK, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said Tuesday that China and the United States are not rivals but partners in cooperation and they should work together to further strengthen bilateral relations.     In a speech delivered at a luncheon co-hosted by the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations and other friendly American organizations, Wen said China-U.S. relations have made significant progress since his first official visit to the United States in 2003.     High-level contacts between the two sides are more frequent than ever before, said Wen, who arrived here Tuesday to attend meetings at the headquarters of the United Nations.     "There are now over 60 dialogue and consultative mechanisms between our two countries. The Strategic Economic Dialogue and the Strategic Dialogue have in particular played an important part in increasing strategic mutual trust between the two sides."     On economic cooperation, Wen noted that China and the United States are now each other's second largest trading partners.     Dialogue and cooperation have also extended to a number of new areas, such as energy resources and climate change, he added.     In addition, China and the United States have maintained communication and coordination on global security issues such as counter-terrorism and non-proliferation and on regional and international hot-spot issues, the Chinese premier said.     The ever-deepening friendship between the two peoples is an integral part of growing relations between the two countries, Wen said.     He also expressed sincere appreciation to the American people from all walks of life for their abiding commitment to China-U.S. friendship and extended heartfelt gratitude to the U.S. government and people for their strong support for China's earthquake relief and efforts in hosting the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.     As to the China-U.S. relations after the upcoming U.S. presidential election, Wen said China hopes to maintain and develop the constructive and cooperative relations with the United States whoever becomes the next U.S. president. When asked about China's food safety, he said that the Chinese government has paid great attention to the country's recent infant formula milk power contamination incident and adopted a series of resolute measures to deal with it.     China will take vigorous measures to ensure the quality of products and food safety, Wen said, adding that China's exports will meet both international standards and requirements of importers and China is willing to enhance cooperation with the U.S. in this regard.     U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao, former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, and Chair of the Board of Directors of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations Carla A. Hills also made speeches during the luncheon.     They shared the view that enhancing China-U.S. cooperation is vital to the maintaining of world peace and stability and the resolution of many issues facing the world, and the U.S. should continue to maintain engagements and cooperation with China.     During his three-day stay in New York, Wen will attend a high-level UN meeting for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Thursday and the general debate of the 63rd UN General Assembly Wednesday. China's hotel and catering industry saw its retail sales rose 24.3 percent in the first seven months over the same period last year, the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said on Friday.The growth rate was 6.5 percentage points higher than the same period last year, said the MOC on its website.Retail sales of the country's hotel and catering industry amounted to 837.49 billion yuan (1.99 billion) between January and July, accounting for 14 percent of the nation's total domestic retail sales during the same period.China's retail sales of consumer goods in the first seven months of this year was 5.9672 trillion yuan, up 21.7 percent, compared with 15.5 percent growth rate recorded over the same period of last year.Foreign hotel and catering enterprises established 399 new branches in China during the January and July period, down 18.2 percent over the same period last year, while contract value rose 4.3 percent to .71 billion.The country's hotel and catering industry reaped 116.8 billion yuan in July alone, representing an increase of 26.5 percent over the same month last year, according to the MOC.

BEIJING, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese shares sank to a 15-month low on Tuesday in very low volume, amid weak investor confidence.     The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index fell 2.76 percent to 2,794.75, its 10th loss in a row. The Shenzhen Component Index fared worse, sinking 4.03 percent, or 395.77 points, to 9,429.50.     The Hushen 300 Index, which reflects about 60 percent of the combined market value in Shanghai and Shenzhen, closed at 2,842.68 points, down 109.57 points, or 3.71 percent.
