UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said here on Tuesday the international community should tackle global climate change through common development, calling for international joint work and pledging China's continued efforts on this issue.     "Global climate change has a profound impact on the existence and development of mankind and is a major challenge facing all countries," the president said when addressing the UN climate change summit.     "Climate change is an environment issue, but also, and more importantly, a development issue," Hu said.     "We should and can only advance efforts to address climate change in the course of development and meet the challenge through common development," he said. 　　FOUR PRINCIPLES     The Chinese president outlined four principles needed for a successful concerted effort to deal with climate change worldwide.     Hu said that fulfilling respective responsibilities, achieving mutual benefit and a win-win outcome, promoting common development and ensuring financing and technology were of utmost importance in making these efforts work. We will endeavor to increase the share of non-fossil fuels in primary energy consumption to around 15 percent by 2020," he added.     Third, China will energetically increase forest carbon sink and endeavor to increase forest coverage by 40 million hectares and forest stock volume by 1.3 billion cubic meters by 2020 from the 2005 levels, Hu said.     "Fourth, we will step up effort to develop green economy, low-carbon economy and circular economy, and enhance research, development and dissemination of climate-friendly technologies," he added.     "Out of a sense of responsibility to the world ... China has taken and will continue to take determined and practical steps to tackle this challenge," said the president.     The Chinese president arrived here Monday for the UN climate change summit and other UN meetings. He will also travel to Pittsburgh for the G20 summit scheduled for Thursday and Friday.  

BEIJING, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- China appreciates India's decision to terminate a trade investigation into Chinese-made passenger car tires, the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said Saturday.     The decision would not only help boost the steady development of bilateral trade ties, but also benefit the downstream businesses of India, the MOC said in a statement on its website.     China hoped to increase exchanges and cooperation on trade issues with the Indian government and encouraged dialogue and cooperation among industries for mutual benefit, it said.     The Directorate General of Safeguards under India's Ministry of Finance initiated a safeguard investigation on passenger car tire imports from China in May, according to the statement.     A safeguard duty, a temporary relief, usually takes the form of increased duties to higher than bound rate or standard rates or quantitative restrictions on imports.     According to Indian government statistics, from April to December last year, India imported 20 million U.S. dollars worth of tires involved in the case from China.

According to a statement released after a meeting held by the State Council here Monday, schools are currently the key places in the country's fight against the virus and classes should be suspended "properly" to avoid mass infection when an outbreak occurs.     "Currently the global epidemic situation is getting worse. As autumn comes, the number of domestic cases in China is also on the rise... The prevention and control work faces fresh obstacles," said the statement.     Primary and secondary schools in Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, remained closed Monday in the wake of a recent outbreak of 43 A/H1N1 influenza cases.     Similar outbreaks have also been reported at schools in other regions, including the provinces of Henan, Hunan, Jiangsu, Anhui and Hainan, as well as the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.     The State Council urged railway and aviation departments to improve their emergency plan against possible epidemic outbreak in crowded situations.     According to the statement, medical staff, technical equipment and materials should be ready at any moment in case of an emergency -- especially around the National Day, which falls on Oct. 1.     In addition, the State Council urged medical companies to stock vaccine and other medicines and ensure vaccine safety for human use.     The meeting was presided over by premier Wen Jiabao.     By last Friday night, 4,415 cases of A/H1N1 flu had been reported on the Chinese mainland, of which 3,577 have recovered. There have been no deaths from A/H1N1 in main land China.

BEIJING, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said here Tuesday China would not change the orientation of its stimulating economic policy as the country is at a critical stage in the recovery of the economy. Wen said, when meeting with World Bank President Robert Zoellick, that China's government would continue to pursue proactive fiscal and moderately easy monetary policies.     "We will not change the orientation of our policy," Wen said.     Wen said China would fully implement and continue to enhance and perfect policy in response to the international financial crisis to achieve the goals of economic and social development. The Ministry of Commerce predicts China's exports will slow their decline or even grow on a monthly basis.     "The macro-economic policy and measures that China adopted in response to the international financial crisis have been proved inconformity with reality, prompt, forceful and effective," Wen said.     Wen said the world economy was now showing signs of stabilizing, but an all-round recovery would be a slow, difficult and complicated process. It would require long-term, concerted efforts by every country in the world in strengthening dialogue, coordinating policy and deepening cooperation.     Wen said imbalances in the global economy were rooted in disparity in development. He urged the international community to pay special attention to difficulties faced by developing countries, especially the least developed ones. He said the gap should be lessened by increasing aid, writing off debts, opening markets and transferring technology.     Wen said China was ready to strengthen cooperation with the World Bank and make new contributions to achieving the UN Millennium Goals and sustainable development of the world.     This is the third time Zoellick has visited China since becoming World Bank President. Following his arrival Monday afternoon, Zoellick exchanged views on the major topics of his agenda in Beijing, the international financial crisis and climate change, with Chinese officials. Besides Beijing, Zoellick will visit Anhui province in east China.     Zoellick said the World Bank was willing to develop cooperation with China in areas such as international development aid, reform of international financial organizations and climate change.

URUMQI, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- A senior government official said Friday the situation in Urumqi, the capital city of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, was under control after local residents had taken to the streets over two days to protest against hypodermic syringe attacks.     There were no major protests in the city Friday, a day after massive protests that left five people dead Thursday, said Executive Deputy Mayor Zhang Hong.
