CANBERRA, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- An anti-China rant by an editor on Australia's biggest-selling national newspaper has come under fire from netizens around the world.     Greg Sheridan, an editor of The Australian, flattered Rebiya Kadeer -- leader of the separatist World Uygur Congress -- for her "courage" to confront the Chinese government in an article published Wednesday.     In his article, titled "Uygurs must fight for rights within China," Sheridan said Rebiya should leave aside her campaign for a separate state for a while and "concentrate instead on human rights, cultural autonomy and democracy," so as to win support and aid from Western nations.     He lauded Rebiya's week-long visit to Australia, saying it would "change the course of Chinese politics."     However, responding to Sheridan's instruction to the self-appointed Uygur leader, many netizens expressed their disagreement with his absurdities and scoffed at his ignorance and crankiness.     "Has anyone worked out of these facts about Kadeer? She was born and grew up in Xinjiang, but she cannot speak Chinese (Mandarin); She has 11 children and many many grand children (a lot of them live abroad); she was once one of the richest women in China; she had been a representative for her people in the highest political body in China and had gushed so much praises for the Chinese government...," Weldon, a netizen in Canberra, said in a follow-up post to Sheridan's article.     "'Extermination of Uygur cultural?' or 'Ethnic cleansing?' or 'Suppressing the minority people?' or 'A woman compassionate for her cause?', I am confused," he said.     Jonny of China called the report "another anti-Chinese rant."     "I did not read all the replies. I did not need to. Most that Iread succinctly corrected your bias," he said.     "The minorities in China including the Tibetans which you again focus on are given favored treatment... Greg your obvious ignorance of China is appalling for a person who writes about international affairs," Jonny added.     A netizen named David said Australia's invitation for Rebiya was wrong.     "Let's imagine what will happen if Australians invite Bin Laden to Sydney to give a speech with topic like 'How to end the U.S. rule around the globe and fight for the rights for all Muslims," he said.     Sharon of Brissy called Sheridan's article "a load of rubbish."     "Get your facts right before you start making bias reporting. The Uygurs get a lot of privileges as compared to the Hans. Plus during the ethnic riots were incited by the Uygurs with the majority who died are Hans," she said.     GMK of Gold Coast, who described himself as a "war veteran -- married to a traditional Australian-Chinese lady with a young son, and a frequent visitor to China," said he was puzzled about this media/Australian government-driven fantasy.     "That is their China and the Chinese, which is being produced. It is nothing like reality," he said.     The 56 separate and distinct ethnic groups within the borders of China all "have their cultural sensitivities guaranteed" by the Chinese government, he noted.     Yue, a netizen in Melbourne, said he did not understand why Western nations always have a prejudice against China.     "Why Western countries always see people instigating terror and hatred in China as a hero? Why do they always believe words said by these people rather than government?" he asked.

CHENGDU, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- China's relatively poor western regions are to receive 296 billion yuan (about 43.3 billion U.S. dollars) of investment through 551 projects signed Friday with investors from both China and abroad.     Those deals were sealed at the tenth Western China International Economy and Trade Fair in Chengdu, provincial capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province.     The region has 12 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities, with a combined population of about 370 million.     Chinese investors contributed 539 of the 551 projects, involving 288.9 billion yuan of investment. The rest 12 projects would be invested by foreign contractors, involving in around 1 billion U.S. dollars of investment.     Sectors involving local resources, equipment manufacturing, service and new and high technology were investors' favorite target areas.     According to agreements signed here, German industrial conglomerate Siemens would spend 30 million yuan in Chengdu to setup a "Global IT Operation Center", intending to provide better IT operation support for its customers.     Meanwhile, Taiwan's Foxconn Group, the world's top maker of outsourced electronics, would invest 1 billion dollars to build an industrial base in Chengdu, setting up production lines for products like LED-TV, LCD module, LED backlight module and LCD package. BEIJING, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- China said on Sunday the U.S. decision to impose special protectionist tariffs on tire imports from China is grave trade protectionism and goes against its commitments made at the Group of 20 summit.     "We hereby express our strong discontentment and firm opposition to the U.S. decision, which was made regardless of China's solemn stance," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said in a statement.     U.S. President Barack Obama decided to impose a tariff on tires imported from China on Sept. 11, which will begin with a 35-percent duty the first year and decrease to 30 percent the second year and 25 percent the third year on passenger vehicle and light-truck tires from China.     "The United States, by making the decision, failed to honor its commitments made at the G20 financial summit and abused trade remedy measures, which is grave trade protectionism and will undermine the China-U.S. economic and trade ties as well as the early recovery of world economy," Jiang said.     China has lodged solemn representation to the U.S. side and reserves its right to take further actions, Jiang said.

URUMQI, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- The party chief of Urumqi and police chief of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region were removed from their posts Saturday. The removal came after the July 5 riot in Urumqi which left 197people dead and following syringe attacks in the city that caused panic among the public. Li Zhi, 59, secretary of the Urumqi Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), was replaced by Zhu Hailun, 51, secretary of the CPC Xinjiang Autonomous Regional Political and Legislative Affairs Committee, according to a decision by the CPC Xinjiang Autonomous Regional Committee and approved by the CPC Central Committee.     Li was appointed the Urumqi party chief in November, 2006.     Also on Saturday, Xinjiang's police chief Liu Yaohua was replaced by Zhu Changjie, party chief of Xinjiang's Aksu Prefecture. Five people were dead and at least 14 people hospitalized over injuries in the protests.     Tens of thousands of people took to the streets to protest against the syringe attacks and demand security guarantees.     By Thursday, local hospitals had dealt with 531 victims of hypodermic syringe stabbings, 106 of whom showed obvious signs of needle attacks.     Chinese military medical experts on Saturday ruled out the possibility that radioactive substance, anthrax and toxic chemical were used in recent syringe attacks in Urumqi City.     "According to the preliminary test results, such possibilities can be ruled out," said Qian Jun, director of Disease Control and Biological Security Office with China's Academy of Military Medical Sciences.     Qian said he, along with other five medical experts from the military, had examined medical records of more than 200 victims since Friday.     Samples had been sent to Beijing for further test, Qian added.     Xinjiang police has captured 25 suspects amid the syringe scare, of whom seven are in police custody, four were arrested and four others were referred for criminal prosecution.     Four suspects, three men and one woman, have been prosecuted for endangering public security, said Wutkur Abdurahman, procurator general of the city's procuratorate Saturday.     The four, all from the Uygur ethnic group, were involved in three cases.     Two suspects threatened a taxi driver with a syringe and robbed him, one suspect allegedly inserted a pin into a woman's buttock at a roadside fruit stall, and the other injured police when resisting arrest with a syringe that contained drug.     SOCIAL ORDER BACK TO NORMAL     Xinhua reporters witnessed Saturday that most of the buses in Urumqi had resumed operation. People could be seen on buses, some of which were even a bit crowded. Many were waiting at bus stops.     A large number of customers could be seen at the Carrefour Supermarket at Nanhunanlu Road. Long queues were seen in front of the cashiers at noon.     In Hepingnanlu Road and Xinhuananlu Road, areas mainly inhabited by people of Uygur ethnic group, shops on both sides of the roads have resumed operation.     Situation in Urumqi came under control Friday, as there were no major protests in the city. DAMASCUS, July 30 (Xinhua) -- Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem said Thursday that Syria is willing to enhance cooperation with China on the basis of mutual benefits.     Moallem made the pledge during a meeting with Wu Sike, China's Special Envoy to the Middle East, and both sides discussed bilateral relations and the latest situation in the Middle East region.     Wu reiterated that China supports Syria's commitment to achieving a just and comprehensive peace based on the relevant UN resolutions. BEIJING, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- China is to launch a two-year campaign to fight corruption and misconduct in the construction sector, the Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP) said Monday.     The move aimed to crack down on offences such as embezzlement, bribery and misconduct in the construction sector and improve the system to prevent offences.     Zhang Geng, SPP deputy procurator general, said the procuratorates nationwide had investigated 16,830 bribery cases in the sector from January 2006 to June 2009, accounting for 46 percent of all commercial bribery cases during that time.     The campaign will focus its efforts on offences such as corruption resulting in substandard construction and giving the green light to construction without a permit.

BEIJING, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- China resolutely opposes U.S. move to start anti-dumping and anti-subsidy investigations into seamless steel pipes imported from China, the Ministry of Commerce(MOC) said.     The current hardships facing the U.S. steel industry was because consumption and demand waned after the financial crisis. "Blindly blaming Chinese imports of dumping or subsidies is lack of factual bases, which China strongly opposes," MOC announced in a statement on its website Saturday.     The statement came after U.S. Department of Commerce said Wednesday that it had initiated anti-dumping and countervailing duty investigations at the request of the U.S. Steel Corporation, V&M Star LP, TMK IPSCO and the United Steelworkers (USW).     The U.S. petitioners requested a 98.37-percent anti-dumping duty against the Chinese imports and additional countervailing duties to offset what they allege are Chinese government subsidies.     The case was the seventh such investigations this year launched by the U.S. Department of Commerce against Chinese imports that included claims of both dumping and subsidies, MOC said.     Resorting to trade protectionism would not solve the real problem, instead it would hurt the interests of U.S. downstream steel businesses as well as bilateral trade, it said.
