“I would say we have been very transparent that we are continuing to invest in businesses that have four great characteristics,” Olsavsky said on the call. “Customers love them, they can grow to be large, they have strong financial returns and they are durable and can last for decades. That is in essence our investment philosophy.”
“Amazon is seen as an essential service through this pandemic, but you have been very slow to install your workers’ protections, and it’s hurt your reputation,” Stahl said to Clark. “You’ve been seen as a company that puts profits ahead of people.”
“Certainly the economics have improved through invention on behalf of the team there, as well as operating efficiencies,” said Szkutak, adding at the time that it is a “challenge” to make the service run profitably.
“At this point retailers are coming to us,” Mehta said. “When the Amazon/Whole Foods announcement happened, essentially every major grocery retailer in the country had an emergency board meeting and right after that board meeting they called us.”
