Zhang, 26, is part of a huge wave of rural workers streaming into China's cities in search of work and opportunity. A UN report released Wednesday said more than half of China's population - now 1.3 billion people - will be living in urban areas within 10 years. Government officials say an estimated 150 million people moved to China's cities between 1999 and 2005, providing labor to fuel the country's breakneck economic growth. "From 1980 to 2030, the population of China will go from being 20 percent urban to almost two-thirds urban. We're in the middle of that transformation. Within the next 10 years we'll cross that halfway mark," said William Ryan, the United Nations Population Fund's information adviser for Asia and the Pacific region. The agency's State of World Population 2007 report says more than half the world's population will live in cities and towns in 2008, with the number expected to grow to 60 percent, or 5 billion people, by 2030. Shanghai - German luxury car maker DaimlerChrysler AG is recalling 1,443 Chinese-made Chrysler 300C sedans to fix defective transmission cooling systems, China's quality watchdog said on Friday. China's disciplinary watchdog posthumously stripped a former senior political adviser of his membership in the Communist Party of China for leading a "dissolute lifestyle and serious violations of Party discipline." Song Pingshun, former chairman of the Tianjin Municipal Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, an advisory body to the parliament in the northern port city of Tianjin, was discovered dead on June 3. A police investigation determined he had committed suicide. The CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection decided to take the rare step of posthumous expulsion after finding that Song had "abused his public power to seek benefits for his mistress, seriously violating CPC discipline." "Song, morally degenerate, kept a mistress and helped her obtain money through illegal means," the discipline watchdog said. Song, 61, a native of northern China's Hebei Province, became the top political adviser in Tianjin, a booming municipality directly under the central government, in March 2006. The weakening global economic environment will slow down growth in Asia and the Pacific, too, this year, but China, India and Japan are expected to keep up the momentum in the region, says the Economic and Social Survey of Asia-Pacific 2007. The three economies contribute more than 60 percent of the region's GDP and close to 45 percent of its imports, creating considerable opportunities for the whole region, says the survey, to be released today by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP). Developing economies in the region grew at 7.9 percent in 2006, up from 7.6 percent in 2005. But their economic growth is projected to slow down to 7.4 percent this year. The decline is mainly because of the unfavorable external environment, including the slowing down of the US economy and falling demand for electronics across the world, says UNESCAP Executive Secretary Kim Hak-Su in a recorded video on the commission's website. The survey shows investment continues to grow in China, while investment and consumption posted healthy gains in the two special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macao. The survey, however, warns against several downside risks in the region, such as a possible oil price hike, abrupt cooling of the US housing market, vulnerability of the currency, global imbalances and reversal of the Japanese economy after its recovery. To ensure better long-term growth in the region, the survey suggests Asian economies monitor the vulnerability of the currency and boost domestic demand through private investment.

A regional pilot scheme designed to provide basic medical insurance for all urban citizens will go nationwide this year, a senior labor official said Tuesday.A further 229 cities will be added to the scheme this year, Wang Dongjin, former vice-minister of labor and social security and head of a team of experts involved with the pilot, said at a national teleconference.By the end of the year, the scheme will cover 317 cities, Wang said.Dubbed by the public as a lifesaving project, the scheme has been well received by residents in the 88 pilot cities and has brought financial and medical relief to all beneficiaries, he said.Launched in September, the program, as of December, covered 40.68 million people with 620,000 of them already benefiting from it, Wang said.With an average annual premium of 236 yuan () for adults and 97 yuan for children, the scheme will be extended to at least 240 million non-working urban residents, such as children, students, the elderly, the disabled and the unemployed.These groups have been given access to the insurance plan through agents at schools and neighborhood communities, Wang said.For the disabled, home visits will be offered to help them sign up, he said.The premiums are paid by households, instead of individuals, he said.
