BEIJING, July 4 (Xinhua) -- China did not lose its advantages in foreign trade despite global downturn and could retain foreign trade level above the global average once global economy recovered, a senior Chinese official said Saturday.     Yi Xiaozhun, vice commerce minister, was speaking at the Global Think Tank Summit that ended Saturday in Beijing.     Though China's foreign trade would not rise sharply as it did in the past few years, the country did not lose its foreign trade advantages thanks to policies to stimulate domestic demands, Yi said.     He said China had been diversifying foreign trade and reported increased trade with countries in Africa, Middle East, middle Asia and Latin America.     Yi also called for halt on protectionism, saying that protectionism had been picking up and about 40 percent of anti-dumping cases and 70 percent of anti-subsidy cases targeted China.     He called for pushing forward the Doha round negotiation, which he believed was key in fighting against protectionism.

BEIJING, April 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao Thursday morning presided over a top-level meeting discussing how to deal with any possible H1N1 influenza epidemic, Health Minister Chen Zhu said at a news briefing.     Hu, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, called together other members of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau to discuss the specific issue, which was triggered by the spread of a new strain of H1N1 virus in North America and other regions.     Hu and other top leaders heard briefings of the country's prevention and preparation for possible epidemic in China, Chen said, adding that the top meeting delayed the scheduled press conference to the afternoon.Chinese Health Minister Chen Zhu attends a press conference held by the State Council Information Office of China in Beijing on April 30, 2009. SHENYANG, May 5 (Xinhua) -- A member of the Japanese parliament(Diet) Tuesday handed over an apology letter signed by 24 Japanese MPs to survivors of Pingdingshan Massacre, in which more than 3,000 Chinese civilians were slaughtered by Japanese soldiers in 1932.     Aihara Kumiko, member of the House of Councillors, or the upper house, repeatedly said "sorry" to massacre survivor Wang Zhimei while holding Wang's hands.     "My mother had lived in Jinan (a city in east China) for five years and got help from local people. She often told me that war changes people, war is a sin," Aihara told the 88-year-old Wang.     "We should take history as a mirror and building a friendly relationship between Japan and China," Aihara said.     She came all the way from Tokyo to Fushun, a city in northwest China's Liaoning Province, to present the apology letter signed by10 members of the lower house and 14 of the upper house of the Japanese parliament to the survivors of the tragedy.     Part of the letter reads "As a human being, as a Diet member elected by Japanese citizens, we are sorry from the depth of our hearts."     The Pingdingshan massacre saw more than 3,000 women, children and elderly of Pingdingshan Village near Fushun killed by invading Japanese soldiers on September 16, 1932.     "The Japanese soldiers told us they were going to take our picture and gathered us in a group. But under the black cloth they didn't have cameras, they had machine guns. The soldiers even bayoneted bodies to ensure the villagers were dead," recalled a survivor named Yang Yufen in 2006, after the survivors' 10-year-long lawsuit for an apology and compensation was rejected by the Japanese Supreme Court.     Aihara also visited the memorial of the massacre. Silent tears ran along her cheeks, her hands joined and eyebrows wrinkled during the visit.     Her face was covered by tears when she saw gasoline cans used in burning the corpses after the massacre.     "We will push the Japanese government to offer an apology and compensation for the massacre," she said.     Aihara said some Diet members have collect donations and are going to send some money to foster a patch of woods near the massacre memorial. "We hope the trees witness friendship between the two countries," she said.     Aihara and the Chinese side planted two pines in front of the memorial.     Along with Aihara, four Japanese lawyers who have been trying to help massacre survivors were also present at the hand-over of the apology letter.     Shiroh Kawakami, one of the lawyers, told Xinhua that they would continue to demand the Japanese government building an apology monument and cemetery for victims of the massacre.     "What we do is not only for the history, for also for the future, the future of both countries," Shiroh said.     It's estimated that 20 to 30 villagers survived the massacre, but now only five of them are still alive, all in late 80s. Wang Zhimei came to Fushun from Changchun City in Jilin Province just to meet the Japanese lawmaker and lawyers.     "I want to thank you for what you have done. The days of us survivors are numbered, we are counting on you (on the government apology and compensation)," Wang said.

BEIJING, June 14 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao stressed the importance of promoting domestic consumption and independent research and development during a three-day inspection tour of the central Hunan Province, which ended Sunday.     Wen said the key to a sound economic future lay in continuing to "unswervingly" implement the government's policies to deal with the international economic downturn.     Companies should increase investment in research and development and better utilize science and technologies to "foster new economic growth points," he said.     Local governments, meanwhile, should develop energy-efficient and environment-friendly industries and put priority on a recycling and green economy, he said. WASHINGTON, April 22 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said on Tuesday that the prosperity of the American economy needs the rest of the world to recover.     "The rest of the world needs the U.S. economy and financial system to recover in order for it to revive," said Geithner in remarks to the Economic Club of Washington. "We remain at the center of global economic activity with financial and trade ties to every region of the globe."     "Just as importantly, we need the rest of the world to recover if we are to prosper again here at home," the Treasury chief said.     "Before the crisis, U.S. exports were among our economy's fastest-growing sectors, accounting for more than 6 million American jobs, or about 5 percent of total private sector employment in the U.S. Now, they are one of its fastest-shrinking," he stated.     He called for global cooperation to cope with the current crisis, which he said was "the most severe crisis in generations."     "As a consequence, the community of nations must work together -- and that work has already begun -- to revive economies around the world and to lay the groundwork for a new, more stable and more sustainable pattern of growth in the future," he said.

BEIJING, May 31 (Xinhua) -- China will raise gasoline and diesel benchmark retail prices by 400 yuan (58.6 U.S. dollars) per tonne as of Monday, the National Development and Reform Commission(NDRC) announced Sunday.     The benchmark retail price for gasoline would increase by 7 percent and the price of diesel by 8 percent, said a statement on the NDRC website. It is the third oil price adjustment this year. On March 25, the NDRC, the country's top economic planner, lifted benchmark retail price of gasoline by 290 yuan per tonne and diesel by 180 yuan per tonne.     The increase was in response to the rising international crude prices under the country's the new fuel pricing mechanism, which took effect Jan. 1, according to the NDRC. China will raise gasoline and diesel benchmark retail prices by 400 yuan (58.6 U.S. dollars) per tonne as of Monday, the National Development and Reform Commission(NDRC) announced Sunday.    According to the new mechanism, China's domestic prices are to be "indirectly linked" to global crude prices "in a controlled manner." China would adjust domestic fuel prices when global crude prices reported a daily fluctuation band of more than 4 percent for 22 working days in a row.     NDRC pricing department official Xu Kuning has explained the "indirect link" as "based upon average global crude prices, while taking into account domestic production costs, taxation, and 'appropriate profits' of oil producers."     Crude prices have jumped 30 percent in May, the largest monthly rise since March 1999, boosted by expectations of a global economic recovery later this year.     Light, sweet crude for July delivery rose 1.23 dollars, or 1.9 percent, to settle at 66.31 dollars a barrel Friday on the New York Mercantile Exchange.     In Sunday's notice, the NDRC urged the two state-owned oil producers, PetroChina and Sinopec, to increase oil production to meet demand.     It also urged local pricing regulators to strengthen supervision over oil prices and crack down on any price violations.

BEIJING, July 8 (Xinhua)-- China's gross domestic product (GDP) growth in the second quarter this year is forecast to accelerate close to 7.8 percent, Goldman Sachs Asia and the Beijing-based Gaohua Securities Company said in a report Wednesday.     "The figure is above our previous forecast of 7.0 percent year on year," said Song Yu, one author of the report and Goldman Sachs Asia's economist on China's macro-economy.     According to the report, economic performance of China in June will show robust improvements, with the industrial output expected to rise about 10 percent in June from 8.9 percent in May.     Fixed asset investment in June is forecast to grow 42 percent year on year, up from 38.7 percent in May.     Exports is expected to decline 22 percent in June from a year earlier, smaller from a 26.4 percent dip in May, while imports may post a eased drop at 18.0 percent from a 25.2 percent fall in May.     The consumer price index is expected to fall 1.5 percent in June from a year ago, compared with a 1.4 percent drop in May. Producer price index would decline 7.6 percent year on year, compared with a slide of 7.2 percent in May.     Zhou Xiaochun, governor of the country's central bank, said in late June that the second quarter is expected to be better than the first, when the gross domestic product grew 6.1 percent. The National Bureau of Statistics said in June that China's GDP will grow close to eight percent in the second quarter.     China is due to release its second-quarter GDP data in mid-July.

BEIJING, June 21 -- Chinese stocks rose to a weekly high on Friday after the securities regulator lifted a nine-month ban on initial public offerings (IPOs), indicating investors' strengthened confidence in the market based on ample liquidity and clearer signs of economic recovery.     The Shanghai Composite Index, which tracks the bigger of China's bourses, rose 26.59, or 0.9 percent, to 2,880.49 at close, its highest close since July 28, 2008.     The CSI 300 Index, measuring exchanges in Shanghai and Shenzhen, gained 0.7 percent to 3,080. Investors are set to return to the bourses in a big way with the return of initial public offerings and robust economic indicators. The market barometer has also shown significant gains in the past few days. Shi Yan    "We expected the new IPOs to be the biggest bad news for the capital market this year," said James Yuan, chief investment officer of Everbright Pramerica Fund Management Co Ltd. "But now it is not as daunting, thanks to the improved economy, more liquidity and new listing rules."     Guilin Sanjin Pharmaceutical Co, a medium-sized drug firm, on Thursday night received regulatory approval from the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) to seek a stock exchange listing, marking the resumption of IPOs since September last year.     The company said it plans to float 46 million A shares on the Shenzhen bourse on June 29 and will start a road show for the same on June 22.     "The restarting of IPOs of smaller firms rather than the big caps indicates that the government aims to stabilize the market," said Dong Chen, senior analyst, CITIC China Securities. "If the market does not panic after the new round of IPOs, the regulator will grant more approvals next week, but probably for small caps."     Earlier reports said China State Construction Engineering Corp (CSCEC), the country's biggest home-builder, would probably be among the first batch of companies to issue 12 billion shares to the public and raise about 40 billion yuan.     Based on the number of new shares to be issued and the average price-earning ratio on the secondary market, analysts said the 32 companies now waiting could raise as much as 70 billion yuan through their IPOs.     "The loose monetary policy, coupled with the huge advance of the Shanghai Composite Index, has bolstered confidence that the stock market can withstand the added supply of stock," said Dong.     "Meanwhile, the anticipation of gains on their investments may propel more investors to test the market waters, when the bullish trend becomes clear," he said.     China's major market barometer has surged nearly 58 percent this year, thanks to the government's timely launch of the 4-trillion-yuan economic stimulus package and loose monetary policy.     The resumption of IPOs is also expected to give a strong boost to brokerages whose earnings are expected to improve on the investment banking revenues.     CITIC Securities gained 2.8 percent to 29.54 yuan, the highest in a year, while Sinolink jumped 10 percent to 21.46 yuan.     Shares of medical companies also outperformed on news of drugmaker Guilin Sanjin's listing and the spread of the H1N1 flu virus.     Beijing Tiantan Biological Products, a biological bacterin producer, jumped to its 10 percent daily limit for the second day in a row to 26.26 yuan after it said on Thursday that it had started to research bacterin for fighting the H1N1 flu virus.
