WASHINGTON, March 11 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday adopted a resolution on Tibet in gross interference in China's internal affairs.     The resolution neglected the remarkable and widely recognized progress in Tibet in politics, economy, culture and society over the past 50 years.     It also repeated groundless accusations against the Chinese government over its Tibet policy and voiced support for the ** Lama's separatist activities.     Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu urged the U.S. representatives Tuesday to follow the basic norms guiding international relations and stop pushing the bill on Tibet.     "The Tibet issue is purely China's domestic issue. The Chinese government and people, as always, oppose any country or anyone to interfere in China's internal affairs on the pretext of the Tibet issue," he said.     This year marks the 50th anniversary of the end of feudal serfdom in Tibet.     Fifty years ago, the central government of China foiled an armed rebellion by the ** Lama and his supporters to block reform in Tibet and split the region from China.     On March 28, 1959, a new local Tibetan government was formed, freeing millions of Tibetan serfs and slaves, who accounted for more than 90 percent of the then population.     "Over the past 50 years, Tibet has undergone profound changes in political, economic and cultural sectors and millions of serfs have become owner of Tibet," Ma said.     However, with the backing of certain anti-China elements in the West, the ** Lama and his followers have continued to pursue either disguised or undisguised activities in an attempt to separate Tibet from China and restore feudal serfdom in the region.     On March 14 last year, followers of the ** Lama staged riots in Lhasa to put pressure on the central government. Their violence resulted in the deaths of 18 civilians and huge property losses.

VALLETTA, Feb. 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping concluded his six-nation tour here Sunday and left for home. Xi arrived in Valletta on Saturday for a two-day official visit to Malta. During his visit, Xi met with Acting Maltese President George Hyzler, Speaker of House of Representatives Louis Galea and held talks with Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi.     During the meeting with Hyzler, Xi said that Sino-Maltese relations have been developing very well in recent years, with a frequent exchange of high-level visits, enhanced mutually beneficial cooperation, and active exchanges in such fields as culture, education and judicature. BEIJING, March 24 (Xinhua) -- Former Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress Raidi has said the democratic reform to abolish serfdom in Tibet was the people's own historical choice.     Raidi, a 71-year-old Tibetan who was once vice secretary of Tibet Autonomous Region's Party Committee, made the remark during an exclusive interview with Xinhua on Tuesday. BEIJING, April 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese shares rose 2.84 percent Monday, advancing for a third consecutive day to a nearly eight-month high, on hopes that the economy had outperformed expectations in the first quarter.     Premier Wen Jiabao told reporters in Thailand Saturday that the economy showed signs of better-than-expected changes during the first quarter as a result of the economic stimulus package.     The National Bureau of Statistics is scheduled to release first-quarter growth data Thursday, which are expected to demonstrate a recovery in the world's fastest-growing economy. SHIJIAZHUANG, April 9 (Xinhua) -- Beijing-based Sanyuan Group successfully bid 49 million yuan (7.2 million U.S. dollars) on Thursday to buy a 95-percent stake in the Sanlu (Shandong) dairy company, previously owned by the Sanlu Group, the bankrupt dairy firm at the center of the melamine contamination scandal.     The shares were put up for sale at an auction in the northern city of Shijiazhuang, capital of Hebei Province, according to sources with the Hebei Jiahai Auction Co. Ltd.     Four companies participated in the auction, which started at 10a.m., with the opening bid of 33 million yuan.     "The company is happy with the result," said a representative of Sanyuan after the auction, but he refused to comment further.     Sanlu (Shandong), which was set up in 2006, specializes in making and selling liquid milk products. The company changed its name to Shandong Ecological Pasture Co. Ltd. in October last year.     The other three bidders were Beijing investment consultancy Tongde Tongyi, a Hebei food company Xiangyao, and Wandashan dairy company in northeast Heilongjiang Province.     Auctioneer Yuan Guoliang told Xinhua that "the four bidders had clear idea about the value of the shares, and the atmosphere was tense."     However, the sale of a Sanlu's 70-percent stake in the Tangshan Sanlu company had been revoked just before the auction.     Sanyuan Group successfully bid 616.5 million yuan to buy Sanlu's core assets on March 4.     Sanlu Group, which was based in Shijiazhuang, had been China's leading seller of milk powder for 15 years until the melamine scandal broke in September last year. The group's revenue hit 10 billion yuan in 2007, when Sanyuan's revenue was only 1 billion yuan.

BEIJING, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- A section of the local prosecutor's office that deals with dereliction of duty is involved in the investigation into Monday night's massive fire in downtown Beijing, the Supreme People's Procuratorate said here Thursday.     The fire led to one death and seven injuries.     The investigation involves two offices, the Supreme Procuratorate said: the Beijing People's Procuratorate and the district procuratorate of Chaoyang, the section of Beijing where the blaze at the China Central Television (CCTV) complex occurred.     The Supreme People's Procuratorate declined to elaborate on what the investigations covered.     China's procuratorate is the equivalent of a prosecutor's or attorney general's office, handling a range of civilian crimes, but it also has a special division responsible for crimes involving dereliction of official duty, such as bribery and corruption, that the police don't handle.     The fire, which engulfed the building that houses some CCTV facilities as well as the unopened Mandarin Oriental Hotel near the futuristic tower that will house the state broadcaster, was caused by a powerful fireworks show put on by CCTV.     One firefighter died from breathing toxic fumes and seven people were hospitalized. The huge blaze also caused widespread traffic congestion in eastern Beijing and led to the evacuation of hundreds of residents.     The police have detained 12 people so far, including a man in charge of the new site's construction, three CCTV workers and eight people CCTV hired from a fireworks company in central Hunan Province to stage the show.     The fireworks they used were dangerous and needed approval before being allowed in downtown Beijing, a Beijing government spokesman has said. He said that CCTV did not get approval and further alleged that its workers ignored police warnings that night.     Monday was the Lantern Festival, which officially ends the Lunar New Year, and it's traditional to light fireworks on that night.

BEIJING, April 10 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Friday congratulated Kim Jong Il, the top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), on his reelection as chairman of the country's National Defense Commission.     Hu, also General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, said in a congratulatory note to Kim that China is ready to work with the DPRK to further boost the good-neighborly, friendly and cooperative ties between the two nations.     The First Session of the 12th Supreme People's Assembly of the DPRK reelected Kim as chairman of the National Defense Commission on Thursday.
