BEIJING, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- China's railways carried 75.05 million passengers between Jan. 11-27, or in the first 17 days of the 40-day Spring Festival travel rush.     The figure represents a 17 percent increase from a year earlier, the Ministry of Railways (MOR) said Wednesday.     The ministry has ordered to add more transport capacity to provinces and municipalities including Sichuan, Chongqing, and Jiangxi to brace for the post-holiday traffic rush. The regions are homes to the largest number of migrant rural workers.     Hundreds of millions of Chinese went home for family gatherings in the lunar new year holiday, the most important traditional one in China, creating the world's largest population migration.     In addition, 114.7 million passengers have traveled by road between Jan. 25-28, up 5.4 percent from the same period last year. Short trips account for 80 percent of the total in the first four days of the seven-day Spring Festival holiday.

  BEIJING, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- The three warships forming the small fleet that set sail from Sanya in south China's Hainan Province for escort mission off Somali are among the most sophisticated vessels of the Chinese navy.     The flagship of the fleet, DDG-169 Wuhan, is a multi-purpose missile destroyer of Type 052B of the People's Liberation Army Navy. It was built by Jiangnan Shipyard of Shanghai in 2002. A ceremony is held before a Chinese naval fleet sets sail from a port in Sanya city of China's southernmost island province of Hainan on Dec. 26, 2008. The Chinese naval fleet including two destroyers and a supply ship from the South China Sea Fleet set off on Friday for waters off Somalia for an escort mission against piracy.    With a displacement of 7,000 tonnes, DDG-169 Wuhan is equipped with 16 anti-ship missiles, 48 surface-to-air missiles, close-in weapons system and a helicopter.     DDG-171 Haikou, the Navy's latest destroyer model, is one of the two Type 052C destroyers. Both the Wuhan and Haikou have a maximum speed of 30 knots.     The supply ship, Weishanhu (pennant number 887) of the Navy's Qiandaohu class, was launched by Huangpu Shipyard in Guangzhou in 2003. It was commissioned in 2004. Weishanhu is the Navy's first model designed to have round-the-clock supply capacity.     Having a displacement of 23,000 tonnes and maximum speed of 19 knots, Weishanhu is the biggest homemade multi-product replenishment ship. Although its primary role is supply, it can also defend itself and take part in offensive operations using its eight 37mm guns.     All three warships belong to the South China Sea Fleet, headquartered in Zhanjiang of Guangdong Province.     The task force commander is Real-Admiral Du Jingchen, who serves as chief of staff of the South China Sea Fleet.     En route to the Gulf of Aden and waters off Somalia, the commander told Xinhua that the expedition has not been given any landing plans and Chinese warships will not accept assignment from other countries or regional organizations.     "But we will exchange information with other country's escort ships and provide humanitarian help in our power to foreign vessels in danger," Du said. NEW YORK, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE)on Monday kicked off its trading session with a special ceremony marking the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the United States.     In a symbolic move, Stephen A. Orlins, president of the U.S. National Committee on U.S.-China Relations (NCUSCR), rang the market's Opening Bell. He was accompanied by Dr. Henry Kissinger, a key trailblazer and eyewitness for the normalization of U.S.- China relations.     The two countries formally established their diplomatic ties on Jan. 1, 1979.     Zhang Yesui, China's UN permanent representative, said the bilateral relations of China and United States is of great importance, not only to the two peoples, but also to the world peace and security, and the global economic development.     Dr. Kissinger, who visited China in 1971, said he is optimistic about the future of the bilateral relations of China and United States. "It is now a pillar of the international order. And peace and prosperity of the world depend closely on the Sino-U.S. relations," he said.     Talking on areas of further co-operation between the two countries, Dr. Kissinger said first of all China and United States should develop a common solution on how to overcome the current international financial and economic crisis, and develop a program of collaboration to tackle the issue.     And "on the key problems that exist in the world -- proliferation, energy, climate change, environment -- China and United States can be a key to a solution of these problems," he said, "So the strategic dialogues between China and United States should not only continue, but be reinforced and strengthened."     NCUSCR President Orlins called the NYSE celebrating ceremony "a real testimony, not only to the historical events, but also to how far we have come."     "When we established diplomatic relations exactly 30 years ago on January 1st, we could not have imagined that we would have Chinese companies listed on the NYSE, whose market capital is in excess of 800 billion U.S. dollars," Orlins said, "It is just remarkable."     Currently, there are 41 companies from Chinese mainland listed with NYSE, the premier U.S. listing venue for non-U.S. companies.     Duncan L. Niederauer, CEO of NYSE Euronext, told Xinhua that he has taken the relations with China as one of his most important initiatives during his years as chief executive. He also suggestedthe Chinese companies to "stay the course" and stick to the good business when dealing with the global financial crisis and economic downturn.     "There is always years like this in global markets where it is a very very tough ride. I think there are a lot of terrific companies in China. They either already listed or are in the queueto be listed, and we're gonna continue to support them through the ups and downs," Niederauer said, "I believe their fortunes will improve overtime and we just need a long-term outlook of it."     NYSE was the first foreign exchange to receive approval to open a representative office in China. After the opening of its Beijing office on Dec. 11, 2007, NYSE has signed memorandums of understanding with China's Dalian Commodity Exchange and Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange in co-operations in the futures and options markets.     Among the guests to the Monday ceremony were Peng Keyu, Chinese consul-general in New York, and Jan Berris, vice president of the NCUSCR.

BEIJING, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) -- Senior Party leader Zhou Yongkang Wednesday asked all law enforcement organs to maintain social stability through careful work at the grassroots level.     It will be an important task for all law enforcement organs to create a peaceful social environment next year to welcome the 60thanniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, said Zhou, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, at a conference of law enforcement officials nationwide.     Law enforcement organs should try their best to find out and properly solve the problems at the grassroots level so as to prevent mass incidents from happening, he said.     He also asked them to prevent and crack down upon serious crimes that threatened people's life and property.     Law enforcement organs should also contribute to the country's economic work through effective implementation of laws, he said.     They were asked to effectively handle cases of violation of economic laws and work to maintain the market order.     Next year the country will push forwards the reform on its judicial system, such as to improve supervision on law enforcement organs, Zhou said. He vowed to fight corruption in law enforcement organs.

He reassured villagers that apart from the expanded subsidies, the government also encouraged enterprises to purchase old appliances and allow farmers to trade in older models for new ones as a move to sustain domestic demand.     The premier reiterated "confidence" wherever he went, saying a solid material foundation, stable financial system, abundant cash flow, large domestic markets, appropriate macroeconomic policies and others steps boosted confidence.     Wen said the State Council, or Cabinet, is drawing up two major plans.     One involves 10 programs to expand demand, further detailing and specifying the 10 stimulus measures kicked out last year.     The other includes the readjustment and improvement of 10 pillar industries. Plans for the development of steel industry and automobile industry have been rolled out and others are under way.

TEHRAN, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- Iran and China signed a 1.76 billion U.S. dollars deal here on Wednesday for the initial development of Iran's North Azadegan oil field, the official IRNA news agency reported.     The deal was signed between China National Petroleum Corporation(CNPC) and the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) in the presence of Iranian oil minister Gholam Hossein Nozari and Chinese ambassador Xie Xiaoyan, IRNA said.     The North Azadegan oil field which located in Iran's western province of Khuzestan has an estimated reserve of six billion barrels of oil and can produce 75,000 barrels per day for 25 years, Nozari was quoted as saying.     Under the deal, CNPC is committed to developing the oil field in two phases, IRNA said.     Oil output of the North Azadegan oil field will reach 150,000 barrels per day when both the two phases of the project are finished, Nozari added.     According to IRNA, the deal is in the form of buy-back terms, based on which CNPC hands over the operation of the field to NIOC after development and receives payment from oil production for a few years to cover its investment.     The period for the development and reimbursement for the first and the second phase of the field would be about 12 and 17 years, Nozari said.
