PYONGYANG, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Kim Yong Nam, president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), met with Dai Bingguo, Chinese state councilor and special envoy of Chinese President Hu Jintao, here Thursday to discuss relations between their two countries.     Kim asked Dai to convey his greetings to his Chinese counterpart, Wu Bangguo, and offered congratulations on the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.     Kim expressed his wish that the Chinese people, under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, will continue the country's modernization drive.     Kim reiterated that it is the unshakable stand of the Worker's Party of Korea and the DPRK government to consolidate and further promote the traditional DPRK-China friendship.     He said the DPRK side would work with the Chinese side to push forward DPRK-China relations.     Dai conveyed Wu Bangguo's greetings, saying the Chinese government and the Chinese people treasured the friendship with the DPRK, and would strengthen the exchange and cooperation with the DPRK side to write together a new chapter of the friendship.     This year also marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries and has been named the Year of China-DPRK Friendship.     After the meeting, Dai and Kim watched the debut of the opera, "The Dream of the Red Chamber" at the Pyongyang Grand Theater. The opera, based on a Chinese classic, was staged first in the 1960s under the initiative and instruction of late DPRK president Kim IlSung.     The opera has been renovated and re-staged as a major event in the Year of China-DPRK Friendship. DPRK top leader Kim Jong Il has taken a strong interest in its development and has watched a rehearsal.

WASHINGTON, July 29 (Xinhua) -- The cooperation between the United States and China has never been so important as it is now, and the just-concluded U.S.-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue (S&ED) has provided a platform to reinforce common interests, a senior U.S. official has said in an exclusive interview with Xinhua.     "We have broadened the dialogue ... and the S&ED is a new approach towards the U.S.-and-China relations," David Loevinger, Treasury executive secretary and senior coordinator for China Affairs and the U.S.-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue, told Xinhua on Tuesday night.     "There was a common understanding that U.S.-China cooperation and engagement on economic issues have never been so important because of the challenges that we face in the global economy and global financial market right now," said Loevinger.     He said he was struck by the fact that both sides have so much in common in the discussion.     "The U.S. and China have a very similar outlook on the global economy and adopted very similar policy response," said Loevinger, once a Treasury Department's Financial Attache in China. "Both U.S. and China act very quickly and aggressively on global economic crisis."     "The monetary and fiscal stimulus in both countries was among the most aggressive and most far-reaching of any major economy," he also noted.     However, during the dialogue, China also expressed its concern over the security of its heavy investment. So far, China has invested more than 1.5 trillion dollars in the United States government-issued securities.     "We are deeply concerned about the security of our financial assets in the United States," Zhu Guangyao, China's assistant finance minister, told Xinhua.     Wang Qishan, Chinese vice premier and co-chair of the S&ED, also urged the United States to protect China's assets during the dialogue.     Loevinger indicated that the United States understands China's concern and explained to the Chinese side the U.S. monetary and fiscal policies during the two-day dialogue, which ended on Tuesday.     "(Federal Reserve) Chairman Bernanke talked about the Federal Reserve's approach to U.S. monetary policy," Loevinger said, referring to an op-ed Bernanke published last week in the Wall Street Journal, in which he talked about tightening monetary policy to prevent the emergence of an inflation once economic recovery is assured.     "Bernanke discussed many of these issues with China," he added. 

BEIJING, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- China is to hold a National Day military and mass parade as well as an evening gala on Tian'anmen Square Thursday to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC).     Following will be highlights of the once-in-a-decade grand celebrations:     -- Chinese leaders, including President Hu Jintao, will be on Tian'anmen Rostrum to observe the parade.     -- President Hu is to review line-ups of the tri-service People's Liberation Army (PLA), standing in an open-top home-made Red Flag limousine.     -- National flag raising ceremony will be held on Tian'anmen Square.     -- Military parade is expected to involve more than 8,000 people, and a total of 52 types of new weapon systems, including the PLA's missiles, airborne early warning and control aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles and other sophisticated military hardware, will be shown.     -- Military paraders will march goose-step through the square in new-style uniforms initiated in 2007.     -- Women militia soldiers in purple skirts will march goose-step through Tian'anmen Square, holding submachine guns. The formation will be led by two models who used to be good at cat walking.     -- Snow Leopard armed police unit, which took charge of security of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, will be shown at the National Day parade.     -- Sixteen female fighter pilots, the country's first batch, are expected to make a debut in a fly-past at the parade.     -- Civilian formations will march through Tian'anmen Square, showcasing panoramic achievements China has made over the past sixdecades. The mass parade will feature dozens of floats themed with, for instance, the Beijing Olympics and the devastating Wenchuan earthquake in southwestern Sichuan last year.     -- Improved relations between the mainland and Taiwan will be showcased at the parade.     -- China's agriculture scientist, Yuan Longping, will wave his iconic invention of "super hybrid rice" atop of an agriculture-themed float, escorted by farmers.     -- China's first astronaut Yang Liwei and first space walker Zhai Zhigang will show up on a float along with four other colleagues that have entered the space aboard Shenzhou series of spaceships since 2003.     -- Hurdler Liu Xiang and diving diva Guo Jingjing will stand ona float to show the achievements in sports. Chinese athletes reaped 51 gold medals in the Beijing Olympics, ranking the first in the gold medal list.     -- About 60,000 people will dance to the song "I Love China" at the grandiose National Day evening gala, showcasing the country's ethnic harmony and development.     -- Fireworks, designed by renowned Chinese artist Cai Guoqiang who masterminded the firework display at the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games, will dazzle the night of the National Day.     -- About 4,000 performers will form a "light cubic" formation in the center of Tian'anmen Square at the gala. COPENHAGEN, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- The impressive celebrations on Oct. 1 has testified that China is now a very important country in the world and holds a strong position globally, a European expert on China said.     The celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China "were very impressive," Kjeld Erik Broedsgaard, professor and director of the Asia Research Center in Copenhagen Business School, told Xinhua in a recent interview.     "I think China now is in a stronger position globally than it was in any times since 1949. The celebrations really testify that this is the case," said Broedsgaard, who has been closely following the development of China for more than 30 years.     China's economic, political and cultural influence has been on the rise in recent years, said Broedsgaard, who has written and edited 18 books and monographs on modern China and East Asian affairs.     Describing China as being at the "forefront in terms of economic development," the Danish professor said China's role is "critical" in tackling the global financial crisis.     On China's political influence, he said China has taken part in "a variety of multilateral for a" in addition to international organizations such as the World Trade Organization and the United Nations.     The Beijing Olympic Games in 2008 also showed China's increasing significance, he observed.     Culturally, "China is also in a position where soft power is increasing," said Broedsgaard, who is a member of the Advisory Committee of the EU-China Academic Network and the Sino-Danish Joint Committee for Cooperation in Science, Technology, and Innovation.     Many people are interested in the Chinese tradition and culture, while more and more people are studying the Chinese language, he said, taking South Korea as an instance.     There are more people in South Korea studying Chinese than English, he explained.     Confucius institutes have been established in many countries, he said, adding that there is a Confucius Business Institute in Copenhagen.     As for the problems that China faces, Broedsgaard said that "there are always problems when a country rises."     But he said it is useful to remember history and put things in a historical perspective, adding that it is very important to remember that this is the "re-emergence" of China, which was a strong and important country in the past.     To ease the concerns of other countries, China has to relate to its partners and major powers and reassure them that it is a win-win situation in which "I get stronger, but you also get benefit," he said.     Broedsgaard also commented on the party building of the Communist Party of China (CPC), which was a focus of the Fourth Plenary Session of the 17th CPC Central Committee held in Beijing from Sept. 15 to Sept. 18.     "The whole issue of party building is important because the quality of leadership is important," he said, adding that the failure of the Soviet Union in the 1990s was part of "a question of the quality of leadership."     The CPC has been able to reform, renew and revitalize itself, he said.

BANGKOK, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- China's Commerce Minister Chen Deming and the economic ministers from 10 ASEAN member states Saturday morning signed the ASEAN-China Investment Agreement during the 41st ASEAN Economic Ministers Meeting (AEM) and related meetings here.
