LONDON, March 13 (Xinhua) -- The Center for Creative Business in London hosted on Thursday Creative Exchange with China, exploring the possibilities of business ventures between the two countries in the creative industry.     The conference, which is aimed to help creative businesses from both China and Britain to get to know each other before exploring the business potentials of the rising industry, has attracted some 200 creative entrepreneurs, creative business managers and executives, policy makers, practitioners academics and researchers.     In his keynote speech delivered at the conference, Michael Bichard, rector of the University of the Arts London, said within the next two years, Britain's creative industries sector is expected to overtake the financial sector as the country's most significant economy. At the same time, China will move ahead of Germany as the world's third largest economy.     "If we remain isolated, we would not be able to achieve our creative goals of building global brands. To make collaborations effective, it takes much deeper look into the respective industries instead of superficial ones," he said.     Bichard, who is also chair of Design Council UK, hopes that Design Council would cooperate with China not only academically, but across the business to develop tomorrow's creative industry.     However, Bichard noted that creative exchange is not just about money, it's about understanding. The Olympics is a strong link between Beijing and London. Bichard urged for enforcing the bond, saying "two countries together can achieve great things."     Professor Xiong Chengyu, director of National Research Centre of Cultural Industry at China's prestigious Tsinghua University, clarified the conceptual difference of cultural industry in China and creative industry in Britain.     "It has only been 5-6 years since we began to talk about the cultural industries in China. In the past in China, we regarded culture as a kind of spiritual course which is focused on social benefit rather than economic benefit. The Chinese government realized how important it is to the national economy and has already carried out a number of policies to help and promote development," he said.     Wang Yongzhang, director general of cultural industries at China's Ministry of Culture, elaborated on China's policy improvement on the cultural industry over the years to serve as a backgrounder to the audience.     Representatives from British and Chinese creative companies also shared information about their experience in China during panel sessions.     The afternoon session dwelled on three topics with participants discussing Investing in China, Investing in UK and Managing Creativity in China.     The one-day conference sponsored by the Center for Creative Business, University of the Arts London and London Business School, is part of China Now, a six-month celebration of Chinese cultural and history across Britain.

BEIJING - China expressed grave concern over Kosovo's unilateral declaration of independence, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao on Monday."Kosovo's unilateral act can produce a series of results that will lead to seriously negative influence on peace and stability in the Balkan region and on the realization of building a multi-ethnic society in Kosovo, which China is deeply concerned about," said Liu.He said the settlement of the Kosovo issue concerns the peace and stability in the Balkan region, the basic norms governing international relations and the authority and role of the United Nations Security Council. WASHINGTON - China warned the United States on Thursday against "groundless smear attacks" against Chinese products and said it was working responsibly to address concerns over a spate of recent food safety scares. "The Chinese Government has not turned a blind eye or tried to cover up. We have taken this matter very seriously, acted responsibly and immediately adopted forceful measures," said a statement by China's embassy in Washington. "Blowing up, complicating or politicizing a problem are irresponsible actions and do not help in its solution," the Chinese mission said in a rare policy pronouncement. "It is even more unacceptable for some to launch groundless smear attacks on China at the excuse of food and drug safety problems," it said. Echoing the Beijing government's complaints about US media reports, the embassy said food safety concerns were not unique to China, 99.2 percent of whose food exports to the United States in 2006 met quality standards. Problematic US imports from China -- including toxic ingredients mixed into pet food and recalls of toy trains and toothpaste -- were isolated cases and "hardly avoidable" amid huge and rapidly growing bilateral trade, the statement said. "It is unfair and irresponsible for the US media to single China out, play up China's food safety problems and mislead the US consumers," it added. Appealing for strengthened cooperation between Chinese and US food inspection authorities, the statement urged Americans to "respect science and treat China's food and drug exports fairly."

China is one of the world's fastest-growing economies, and its expansion has had a ripple effect on prosperity in other countries and offset more modest growth rates in North America, Europe and Japan. Trichet said the current boom was "absolutely exceptional in the global economy," but warned that this could not last indefinitely. "Complacency would be the worst possible advice for all of us," he said. Japan, where growth is a sluggish 2 percent, is keeping a watchful eye on the new Asian giant. SHANGHAI: Preliminary investigations showed improper maintenance work had caused a Shanghai gas station explosion on Saturday, which saw four killed and 40 injured.A team of officials from related government agencies is investigating the blast at the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) outlet in Pudong District, reported the Xinmin Evening News Sunday.The station had earlier been suspended on October 11 for safety concerns and was scheduled for reopening Sunday.CNPC did not respond to media queries on the explosion.Most of those injured from the incident have been discharged from hospital.Two of the 29 blast victims sent to Punan Hospital died while 26 were discharged Sunday morning.A 49-year-old woman who was hit on the head by a piece of blast debris is still under observation at the hospital.She was said to have been in her apartment close to the station when the explosion shattered her window.The 13 other injured who were sent for treatment at the Pudong branch of Renji Hospital have been discharged.The explosion on Saturday occurred at 7:50 am in the junction of South Yanggao and Pusan roads.Two maintenance workers on the site were killed instantly. Witnesses said one of the workers was blown five stories high before landing nearby.A woman who was cycling 1 km away from the station was hit by a piece of blast debris and died in hospital.A motorcyclist, later identified as Wang Dong from Anhui Province, also died after debris hit him on the head.He had taken off his helmet to answer a call on his mobile phone.The Shanghai Evening News said Sunday that visits to several gas stations in the area found unsafe practices.Drivers lining up for gas smoked and used mobile phones without being stopped by station employees.The blast also damaged a bus that had stopped near the station and injured passengers on board. A convenience store, motel and several other nearby buildings were also hit.Traffic disrupted by the explosion resumed Sunday.

BEIJING -- China regrets that the United States requested the World Trade Organization (WTO) to set up a dispute settlement panel to solve the intellectual property rights (IPR) disputes between the two sides.Wang Xinpei, spokesperson of the Ministry of Commerce, made the remarks in a news conference here Thursday.The Chinese government has always been firm in protecting IPR and tried to solve IPR protection problems through dialogues, Wang said.China has detailed and clarified problems raised by the US and showed great sincerity, Wang said.China's laws regarding IPR protection completely meet WTO requirements, Wang said, adding China is opposed to any WTO member's move of making developing members shoulder extra obligations through dispute settlement system, Wang said.China is studying the US request and will act actively, Wang said.The United States on Monday requested the WTO to establish a dispute settlement panel regarding so-called China's deficiencies in intellectual property protection.The US initiated the dispute over the issue by requesting consultations with China on April 10, 2007.Under WTO rules, the WTO Dispute Settlement Body (DSB) will consider the US request for the establishment of a panel at its next meeting on August 31.

BEIJING - Floods and landslides have killed at least 360 people across China this summer and destroyed more than 4 million hectares (15.4 million sq miles) of crops, Xinhua news agency said on Wednesday. Direct economic losses were 24.3 billion yuan (.21 billion), according to latest figures from the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters. "Apart from 217,000 houses wholly or partially destroyed, more than 4.28 million hectares of grain crops have been hit, with 2.03 million hectares totally destroyed," headquarters deputy director Cheng Dianlong was quoted as saying. Most of the deaths occurred after downpours across the Jialing River Valley in the southwest province of Sichuan which have resulted in floods in almost all the tributaries of Jujiang River, a branch of the Jialing, and triggered severe mountain torrents, mud-rock flows and landslides. "Ferocious floods battered 40 counties along their route, submerging the downtown areas of four counties and shattering two small dams," Xinhua said. Cheng warned the situation across the Huai River Valley was at flashpoint with all trunk rivers there reporting dangerously high water levels. China flooded dozens of evacuated villages to ease pressure from the swollen Huai in the eastern province of Anhui. More rain was forecast for the next two days along the Huai, flowing through the central province of Henan and the eastern provinces of Anhui and Jiangsu. A total of 545 people were killed by natural disasters in China in the first half of the year, according to a report released by the Ministry of Civil Affairs. Another 78 people went missing as a result of natural disasters, including floods, landslides, mudflows, gales, snowstorms and earthquakes.

Fifty-two workers were trapped early Sunday when a torrent of mud and water engulfed a rail tunnel under construction in central China. Rescue teams managed to free 35 of the workers building the tunnel in Hubei province and the remaining 17 trapped about 200 metres (660 feet) below ground would soon be freed, the Xinhua New Agency added.
