BEIJING, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- Heavy snow in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region had left one person dead and forced the evacuation of 5,435 as of 8:00 p.m. Friday, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs Saturday.     The heavy snow also flattened 799 houses and caused damages to 4,897 others in the region, the ministry said. BEIJING, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- Profits of China's state-owned enterprises (SOEs) administered by the central government more than doubled in October from a year ago after months of declines, a senior official said here on Friday.     The 132 central SOEs reaped a profit of 79.5 billion yuan (11.64 billion U.S. dollars) in October, up 151 percent year on year, said Huang Shuhe, deputy director of the State-owed Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC) at the 2009 Annual CEO Forum.     In October, revenues surged by 22 percent from a year ago to nearly 1.16 trillion yuan, Huang said.     Their profits during Jan-Oct was 633.8 billion yuan, while revenues amounted to 9.83 trillion yuan during the same period.     Huang also noted 24 central SOEs had entered the rank of Fortune 500 companies.     "China's companies still face difficulties and great challenges due to roaring raw material prices, huge environmental pressure and rampant protectionism triggered by the financial crisis," he said.     He said the companies should further enhance independent innovation, improve corporate governance and accelerate the pace of "go global" to compete with foreign brands.

HANGZHOU, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States said Thursday they would not stage any new trade protection measures against each other, a significant step which lays the groundwork for the presidential summit next month.     "Both sides agreed on not introducing any new trade protection measures against each other as both vowed to oppose trade and investment protectionism and observe the related consensus of the G20 summit," Chinese Commerce Minister Chen Deming said later Thursday. BEIJING, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- A report on the building of rural social security system was submitted Thursday to the ongoing session of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, for deliberation.     Sun Wensheng, vice chairman of the NPC Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee, said steady progress had been made in the development of rural social security system when delivering the report at the session of the NPC Standing Committee.     A total of 833 million rural residents, or 94 percent of the rural population, have joined the rural cooperative medical care system, up 2.5 percentage points from the beginning of this year, according to the report.     The rural cooperative medical care system, a government initiative implemented in 2005 that intended to make health services more affordable for the rural poor, had alleviated illness-caused poverty among farmers, it said.     The report said 320 counties, or 11.6 percent of the country's total, had been or would be approved to try a new rural social pension insurance system, which would benefit more than 15 million rural residents.     Under the pension system, senior rural residents will receive a monthly ole-age pension of varying amounts, which will be set by government according to the local income standards.     However, some local governments were financially challenged to implement the rural social security programs and only a relatively small percentage of migrant farmer workers were covered, Sun said.     The report was the result of a nearly four-month investigation conducted by the NPC Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee.     Initiated in September, the investigation covered 17 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions.

TAIPEI, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese mainland's 20 million yuan of donations to ethnic minorities in the typhoon-hit Taiwan have been "all given out", Kao Chin Su-mei, a representative of the ethnic minorities, said here Sunday.     Earlier in August, the Taiwan Work Office of the Communist Party of China Central Committee announced it has raised 20 million yuan (about 95.4 million new Taiwan dollars) for the ethnic minorities in Taiwan after Typhoon Morakot hit the island.     The donation plan was announced when a delegation headed by Kao Chin Su-mei visited Beijing on August 19.     The donation has been distributed to more than 2,153 homeless ethnic minority families (30,000 new Taiwan dollars for each), more than 3,300 primary and junior high school ethnic minority students in hardest-hit areas (5,000 new Taiwan dollars for each), and nearly 14,00 senior high school and junior college ethnic minority students (10,000 new Taiwan dollars for each), according to Gao Chin Su-mei.     All the donation had been distributed to ethnic minority victims of the typhoon, she said.     Currently, about 500,000 people of ethnic minorities live in Taiwan, 80 percent of whom make a living by growing and processing agricultural products.
