Xi said the two countries should take responsibility for safeguarding global peace and promoting prosperity.
Xi made the remarks at a symposium attended by representatives of non-Communist parties, All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce and those without party affiliations on Dec 15, 2017, whose opinions and suggestions on the revision to the Constitution were heard.
Xi made the remarks in a report to the 19th CPC National Congress in the Great Hall of the People in central Beijing.
Xi's remarks were well-received in the city. Lau Siu-kai, vice-president of the Chinese Association of Hong Kong and Macao Studies-the nation's leading think tank on Hong Kong affairs-said the New Year's speech made to a global audience showed the central government's concern for Hong Kong, which has been divided by protests for more than half a year.
Xi called on the two countries to continue to support each other in issues related to core interests and major concerns. The two should expand exchanges in education and culture areas, Xi added.
Xi said that under the strong leadership of the Communist Party of China, the areas hit by the powerful quake had reached "remarkable achievements in restoration and reconstruction work, providing useful experience and inspiration for the international community in post-disaster reconstruction work".
