BEIJING, April 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao inspected the southern province of Hainan before attending the annual meeting of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) opening on Saturday.     The forum, April 11-13, is a platform for high-level interaction between leaders from Asia and the world. Boao has been the permanent venue of the annual regional economic forum since 2001.     Hu, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, discussed reform and development issues with local officials and visited with a public made up of various ethnic groups during the inspection tour that started on Monday.     The island province marks the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Hainan special economic zone (SEZ) later this month. Hu visited an exhibition marking the anniversary at the provincial museum.     "Over the past two decades, Hainan's economic and social development has made a remarkable progress. The appearance of cities and villages has undergone profound changes. Practice shows the policy of setting up SEZ in Hainan is completely correct," said the president. The throughput of the harbor, launched in 1990, reached 4.27 million tons in 2007.     Hu encouraged officials and workers to seize the regional economic cooperation opportunity. BEIJING, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- China is ready to work together with the United States to forge ahead bilateral relations of constructive cooperation along the right track and in a sustained, healthy and stable manner, President Hu Jintao said here on Sunday.During a meeting with his U.S. counterpart George W. Todd Bachman died from knife wounds while his wife suffered multiple stab wounds and was in critical but stable condition after an eight-hour surgery.    Police said that the assailant, 47-year-old Tang Yongming from Hangzhou of east China's Zhejiang Province, later killed himself by jumping off a 130-foot high balcony on the Drum Tower.    During the Sunday meeting, the two presidents also exchanged views on other issues, including the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue and the Iran nuclear issue.    They agreed that the two sides should maintain communication and coordination, and make joint efforts to facilitate the proper settlement of these issues.    Both leaders also made a positive evaluation of the progress achieved through the strategic and economic dialogue between the two countries, and agreed to work together to help the dialogue achieve more positive results.

DUSHANBE, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and his Kyrgyz counterpart Kurmanbek Bakiyev on Thursday agreed to promote cooperation of the two countries in various fields.     During a meeting with Bakiyev here, Hu said "The consensus reached between us during my visit to Kyrgyzstan last year to fully deepen the mutually beneficial cooperation in all areas has been orderly put into practice, and bilateral ties have made new progress."     China attaches great importance to its ties with Kyrgyzstan and regards Kyrgyzstan as an important partner in Central Asia, he added.     Hu urged the two sides to well implement bilateral cooperative programs in the building of roads and railways, and to promote business at land ports to deepen bilateral trade and economic cooperation. The SCO, founded in 2001, groups China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.     After paying a state visit to Tajikistan and attending the SCO summit, Hu would fly to Turkmenistan on Thursday night. CHENGDU, May 13 (Xinhua) -- A senior official with the Sichuan Provincial government said Tuesday the death toll in the province has exceeded 12,000, and is still rising.     Li Chengyun, vice governor of Sichuan, said at a news conference Tuesday afternoon that the death toll was based on incomplete figures tallied by 4:00 p.m. Tuesday. He said another 26,206 people were injured, and more than 9,400 people were buried in debris.     Li also provided a breakdown of the death toll, including 161 in the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, 7,395 in Mianyang City, 2,648 in Deyang City, 959 in the provincial capital Chengdu and 700 in Guangyuan City. Other casualties were reported in cities including Ya'an, Ziyang and the Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. A large number of people were believed to be under the debris.     They said 3,000 people were known to have survived, and the town's total population is 12,000. No information on detailed casualties could be available.     Li Shiming, commander of the Chengdu Military Area Command, said the soldiers had distributed food and water to children and injured people in the town, and more supplies would be airdropped to the area.

HAIKOU, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Higos, the 17th tropical storm of the year, landed in China's southernmost Hainan Province Friday evening, local observatory said.     Higos landed at 10:15 p.m. in Longlou Town, Wenchang City, 19.6 degrees north latitude and 111.0 degrees east longitude. The wind speed at the eye of the storm was 18 meters per second, according to the Hainan Provincial Meteorological Observatory.     It was forecast to weaken and move northwest towards the coastal areas of western Guangdong Province. Delayed trucks are parked at the Xiuying port in Haikou, capital of south China's Hainan Province Oct. 3, 2008, due to the suspension of ferry service.In total, 24,115 fishing boats in the province had returned to port and coastal fisheries staff had gone home. All recreational sporting activities on the air or sea were also suspended on Friday, said Lin Mingzhong, Hainan Provincial Office for Flood, Wind and Drought Control deputy director.     He predicted Higos would have minor impact on the island as the rainfall was expected to be around 100 mm. It was likely to affect some small reservoirs as their current water level was high.     Higos was formed on Tuesday in the Pacific Ocean, coming on the heels of tropical storms Jangmi and Hagupit, which combined had killed about 20 people in China. BEIJING, April 19 (Xinhua) -- The All-China Journalists Association (ACJA) on Saturday asked U.S.-based. news network CNN and its commentator Jack Cafferty to apologize for his remarks regarding China.     In an interview with Chinese media including Xinhua News Agency, a senior official with the ACJA strongly condemned Cafferty for his "insulting" words in a TV show on April 9 and asked him and CNN to make a formal apology to all Chinese as soon as possible.     Cafferty said in the TV show that Chinese products were "junk" and China was "basically the same bunch of goons and thugs they've been for the last 50 years" when the Olympic torch relay was going on in San Francisco.     Since the Lhasa violence on March 14, some foreign media including CNN had made a number of biased reports about the incident, the official said.     CNN had violated the principle of objective reporting, and "this is not what responsible media should do," he said.     "And Cafferty also disregarded a journalist's professional ethics to attack a country with insulting words," the official said.     Despite having an effective mechanism to deal with false reporting, CNN issued a statement on its website six days after Cafferty's remarks, which not only pleaded for him, but also spearheaded its attack on the Chinese government, he said.     CNN issued a statement on Tuesday saying, "It was not Mr. Cafferty's nor CNN's intent to cause offence to the Chinese people, and CNN would apologize to anyone who has interpreted the comments in this way."     But, the statement said that Cafferty was offering his "strongly held" opinion of the Chinese government, not China's people.     "We hope CNN and Cafferty to realize that they have harmed the feelings of Chinese and apologize with a rational and responsible attitude," the official said.     With the Olympic Games drawing near, the ACJA welcomed all foreign media to cover the event in an objective and balanced way, he said.
